Dear Friends

Central West Ballet sends you our best wishes for a healthy and happy 2021!

As with so many individuals and organizations last year, losses abounded as we navigated our new reality, but we responded with resilience, moving our Academy classes online, performing at an outdoor venue in October as well as filming an in-studio production of Nutcracker in a Nutshell, an abbreviated version of our traditional Nutcracker. Filming Nutcracker in a Nutshell was truly a labor of love; streaming the video allowed us, in spite of pandemic restrictions on travel and gatherings, to bring together our community and the families and friends of our dancers for this beloved holiday tradition. We continue to reimagine and upgrade our Robbins studio into a performance venue and look forward to more productions in it later this spring, hoping to return to the Gallo Center for the Arts in the fall.

Dear Friends

I’d like to tell you a story. It’s a story at the heart of Central West Ballet. It’s a story about one of our own dancers and the transformative power of ballet:

With a little bit of tap and jazz behind him and thinking about a career in musical theater, Mitchell Welch was 13 when he auditioned for MPA’s production of Billy Elliot, a play about following dreams, a play about a young man’s desire to dance rather than work in the coal mines like his father. Mitchell landed the role of Billy without ever having seen a ballet; to play the character, he began classes at CWB six days a week. He loved it and decided to dance with us even before the production run was over. He has moved through the ranks of CWB2, CWB Trainee and Company Artist in four short years. He sees ballet as a combination of sport and art; although it is the hardest thing he has ever done, he loves performing as well as the discipline, challenge and ability to express himself through ballet. His talents and growth at CWB have been noticed: in 2019 Mitchell was chosen for a Summer Intensive Program at Ballet West in Salt Lake City and has been selected to attend San Francisco Ballet’s Intensive Program this summer! He is our very own Billy Elliot; Mitchell’s transformative experience with Central West Ballet has led him to follow a new dream, the dream of becoming a professional dancer.
